March Society Meeting

Excellent meeting last night – and we were only one person short of full capacity for the room!

The presentation by Mike Kelley on the Cromford Canal was very good, very authoritative and well presented.

Thanks to the new committee members as they assumed their new roles and thanks to all the members and guests for such a good-natured evening.

Major Hotelier in Co-op Move

Premier Inn is to be the key occupier of Chesterfield’s former Co-op, the Derbyshire Times can exclusively reveal.

An 89-bedroom hotel and a Beefeater restaurant will open at the Elder Way site next year in a move set to create 60 jobs.

Many people were concerned that the landmark shop would be demolished and the building lost forever.

New Plans for Walton Works site

There are new plans for the Walton Works site off Chatsworth Road and the Derbyshire Times have an excellent article by Michael Broomhead to gather people’s opinions entitled “What do you think of the plans”.

The building has been vacant for many years and is becoming an eyesore as things deteriorate. But the planning application would change all that, as it proposes:

  • 382 homes and apartments
  • 2 retail units
  • A new pub
  • 245 parking places

Robinson PLC and Hathersage based developers Blue Deer Ltd have devised the plans and say “…the fresh plans would provide ‘much-needed’ housing for the area.”

There is currently a consultation process in progress via the council before the planning committee makes it’s decision.

Battle of Chesterfield – 750th anniversary event

Sun 15 May 2016

A large, medieval-style event is coming to the town centre to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Chesterfield.

There will be plenty of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy including an arena and medieval craft area in New Square, along with music, dancing and games and a battle from the Swords of Mercia recreation group.

The highlight of the day will be a re-enactment of Robert de Ferrers being brought out of the ‘Crooked Spire’ and paraded through town on a medieval style cart. He will then be ‘tried’ in New Square and banished from Chesterfield!
